PHOTO ALBUM 1 - Lot 10
PHOTO ALBUM 1
Paris, Centre Georges Pompidou, [circa 1977–1978]. Large quarto, publisher’s hardcover with illustrated dust jacket.
First volume in the Photographic Albums series published by the Centre Georges Pompidou upon the opening of the National Museum of Modern Art. Conceived as a veritable imaginary museum of photography, the book brings together a significant selection of images spanning the history of the medium from its origins through the 20th century.
It features the great pioneers (Nadar, Le Gray, Atget, Cameron, Stieglitz, Steichen, Weston, Strand, etc.) as well as the leading figures in documentary, humanist, and artistic photography. Each photograph is reproduced full-page or in large format, accompanied by a brief caption that emphasizes the visual interpretation of the image.
Published at a time when the Centre Georges Pompidou played a major role in the institutional recognition of photography in France, this first album remains an important milestone in the dissemination of photographic culture to a wide audience.
Condition: good copy. Dust jacket slightly scuffed with small tears at the top and bottom edges and corners; interior in very fresh condition.
