A beautiful monograph dedicated to the American photographer Hector Acebes (1921–2007), whose travels in Africa between 1948 and 1953 constitute one of the most remarkable photographic records of sub-Saharan Africa on the eve of independence. Long unpublished, this collection reveals a profoundly humanistic perspective, attentive to the people, landscapes, and traditional cultures. The photographs, reproduced full-page with remarkable print quality, cover Senegal, Mali, Niger, Cameroon, Congo, Uganda, Kenya, and East Africa, among other places. It also features several portraits that have become iconic, notably those of Seydou Keïta and other major figures in African photography. The book is accompanied by historical essays that place this work within the context of the first major photographic campaigns carried out in Africa after World War II. It is now the definitive publication on Hector Acebes. Condition: a very fine copy. Dust jacket in excellent condition with very slight signs of wear.
