TISSOT (Pierre-François) (1768–1854). - Lot 295
TISSOT (Pierre-François) (1768–1854). Autograph letter signed “Tissot,” as acting deputy of the Commission of Agriculture and the Arts. Paris, 28 Fructidor Year II (September 14, 1794). 2 folio pages on laid paper, with the engraved letterhead of the Commission of Agriculture and the Arts, Plant Division, featuring the motto “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity” and a republican vignette. Handwritten address to the Citizens who are members of the Civil Committee of the Popincourt section. Autograph signature “Tissot,” followed by the notation “acting deputy.” An interesting administrative letter regarding the implementation of the decree of 27 Thermidor, Year II, concerning compensation for harvesters requisitioned for the harvests. Tissot points out that the Commission has no authority to interpret the decrees of the Committee of Public Safety and specifies that compensation is reserved exclusively for workers prevented from working due to the completion of the harvests or as a result of injuries certified by a municipal certificate. He therefore requests that the authorities of the Popincourt section forward the lists of names and the supporting documents necessary for issuing payment orders. The letter concludes with the following closing: “We regret that we are not authorized to do what you wish for the zealous citizens who came to the aid of their brothers in the countryside. Greetings and fraternity. ” Pierre-François Tissot (1768–1854), then twenty-six years old, had just joined the Commission of Agriculture and the Arts as an acting deputy, a position attested to by several official publications of the Commission signed “Berthollet, L’Héritier, commissioners; Tissot, acting deputy.” He would later become a man of letters, a historian, a professor at the Collège de France, a member of the Académie française, and one of the most renowned historians of the Revolution and the Empire.
