TIRMAN (Louis) (1837–1899) Signed autograph letter, Algiers, January 6, 1885. A 2-page autograph letter on 4-page letterhead of the General Government of Algeria, dated Algiers, January 6, 1885, signed by Louis Tirman, Governor-General of Algeria. An important official letter addressed to Gaston Thomson, deputy for Constantine, regarding a request from the residents of Aïn-Cherchar to have their territory designated as a fully-fledged municipality. Tirman states that the matter is being processed in accordance with the provisions of the law of April 5, 1884, and that it will be submitted for the opinion of the General Council of Constantine during its regular April session. He also addresses the issue of expanding the settlement area of Aïn-Cherchar, on which he promises to keep his correspondent informed. A leading colonial administrator, Louis Tirman served as Governor-General of Algeria from 1881 to 1891. His administration was marked by the reorganization of fully-fledged municipalities, the development of agricultural colonization, and the implementation of the Third Republic’s major administrative reforms in Algeria. An important administrative letter illustrating the policy of colonization and territorial organization in French Algeria at the beginning of the Third Republic.
