SÉBASTIANI DE LA PORTA (Horace François, Count). - Lot 286
SÉBASTIANI DE LA PORTA (Horace François, Count). Signed autograph letter to “Monsieur le Comte.” London, February 8, 1838. Signed autograph letter, 1 page in-4, dated London, February 8, 1838, addressed to “Monsieur le Comte” and signed Sébastiani. Horace François Bastien Sébastiani de La Porta (1772–1851), a general during the Revolution and the Empire, a Peer of France, an ambassador, Minister of the Navy, and later Minister of Foreign Affairs under the July Monarchy, was elevated to the rank of Marshal of France in 1840. An interesting diplomatic letter written while he was French ambassador to London. Sébastiani forwards a copy of a dispatch sent from Athens by Sir Edward Lyons, dated January 20 of that year. He notes that Lord Palmerston had provided him with the original of this dispatch, which he considers to confirm the views expressed at the conference regarding “the necessity of bringing the Greek government back to a more sound assessment of its needs and duties.” This document is directly related to the Eastern Question and the policy of the Great Powers toward Greece during the early years of Otto I’s reign, a particularly significant period in European diplomacy. Beautiful autograph signature “Sébastiani” at the bottom of the letter. Condition: very good condition. Slight horizontal crease from handling and faint marginal foxing. Preserved in a vintage folder bearing a handwritten identification note.
