SARCEY (Francisque) (1827–1899). - Lot 282
SARCEY (Francisque) (1827–1899). Signed autograph letter. No place, no date. Signed autograph letter, 1 page, in-8. A short letter addressed to a correspondent named Desmoulins, regarding a recommendation on behalf of a third party. In it, Sarcey explains that he has made several attempts, without success, due to the difficult economic situation: “I went to see So-and-so three times. I believe that at the moment we are not on good terms with the public. There won’t be many job opportunities for you in the near future. ” He nevertheless advises his correspondent to continue his efforts: “So do your best at the office… or rather, no—just give the person to whom you’re handing this letter my warmest regards for a happy Saturday.” The letter ends with the closing: “Yours,” followed by Francisque Sarcey’s handwritten signature. The most influential theater critic of the second half of the 19th century, Francisque Sarcey served as the theater columnist for *Le Temps* for more than thirty years. His authority over Parisian theater life was such that his judgment could make or break a play’s success. This is an interesting letter that attests to the role Francisque Sarcey played as a mediator and patron in literary and journalistic circles.
