ROUSSEAU (Victor). - Lot 274
ROUSSEAU (Victor). Original signed and inscribed photograph depicting a sculpted bust. March 1920. Original silver-based photograph (approx. 18 × 24 cm), depicting a marble bust created by the Belgian sculptor Victor Rousseau, bearing a long autograph inscription signed and dated March 1920. Victor Rousseau (1865–1954), a Belgian sculptor and medalist, was one of the leading figures in Symbolist sculpture in Belgium. A professor and later director of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, he created numerous public monuments, busts, and portraits of prominent figures from the political, scientific, and artistic worlds. The autographed inscription, addressed to Georges Marlow, reads: “To dear Georges Marlow, with my warmest admiration. Victor Rousseau III-1920” This studio photograph captures a high-quality bust executed in the refined and idealistic style characteristic of Victor Rousseau. Photographs autographed by the sculptor are significantly rarer than simple autographed letters and are particularly sought-after items when addressed to the person depicted or to one of their close associates. Condition: generally good condition. Some minor wear at the edges, a slight crease in the corner, and subtle signs of handling. The print and the autograph dedication are in excellent condition.
