ROQUEPLAN (Nestor) & ROQUEPLAN (Camille). - Lot 272
ROQUEPLAN (Nestor) & ROQUEPLAN (Camille). Important signed autograph contract regarding the direction of sets for the Opera. Paris, April 1, 1852. A two-page folio-sized autograph contract, drawn up on stamped paper, signed by Nestor Roqueplan and Camille Roqueplan. A very interesting contract by which Nestor Roqueplan, director of the Opera, hires his brother Camille Roqueplan—one of the leading French Romantic painters—as general inspector of sets and costumes. The contract stipulates that Camille: will serve as inspector general of sets and costumes; will provide his opinion on all set and costume designs; will be employed from April 1 through December 31, 1852; receive an annual salary of 12,000 francs, payable monthly; be provided with housing on the Opera’s premises, including a painting studio, outbuildings, heating, and lighting. The document is signed by both brothers. A rare example of the connection between Romantic painting and stage design at the Paris Opera in the mid-19th century. Condition: in very good condition. Stamped paper with revenue stamps in perfect condition. A few creases from filing.
