PRÉVILLE, Gisèle (known as Gisèle Mairet) (1918–2006). - Lot 259
PRÉVILLE, Gisèle (known as Gisèle Mairet) (1918–2006). Signed autograph letter to a friend. Paris, February 20 [no year, circa 1940–1950]. In-8, 2 handwritten pages in brown ink on a bifolium (approx. 21 × 13.5 cm). A charming autograph letter signed by Gisèle Préville, a French actress who rose to fame after being crowned Miss France 1935 and went on to make a name for herself in theater and film from the 1930s through the 1950s. Addressed to a close friend whom she simply calls “My dear Friend,” this letter is entirely devoted to expressing her regret at being unable to keep a long-standing appointment. The actress emphasizes that her absence is beyond her control: “I apologize a thousand times for not being able to attend this meeting… it is impossible for me and beyond my control. ” She asks her correspondent not to hold this absence against her and to get in touch again: “Please don’t be upset with me, and do give me a call soon to set up another meeting...” The letter ends with a particularly cordial closing: “A thousand apologies once again, and see you soon!” followed by her handwritten signature. Crowned Miss Paris, then Miss France 1935, Gisèle Préville simultaneously pursued an acting career that took her to both the stage and the screen, where she starred in films directed by several leading French directors. Her autographed correspondence remains a rare find on the market. In good condition. Folding creases from mailing, slight patina on the paper. Generous, clearly legible handwriting; signature perfectly preserved. A delightful autograph letter, full of spontaneity, offering a glimpse into the daily life of a French actress in the mid-20th century.
