Porto-Riche (Georges de Porto-Riche, 1849–1930) - Lot 257
Porto-Riche (Georges de Porto-Riche, 1849–1930) Signed autograph letter, 2 pages in-8 on a double sheet, addressed to a friend, undated and undated (toward the end of his life). An interesting letter from the academician and playwright Georges de Porto-Riche, a major figure in late 19th-century French psychological theater, in which he discusses, with a mixture of irony and melancholy, a planned trip, his health, and his literary work. He opens his letter with a disillusioned reflection: “A trip may be pointless... ” He explains that he is giving up on a trip, preferring to return to the tranquility of his home. He describes with great sensitivity the peaceful atmosphere of his home, mentioning the presence of his daughter, reading, his horse, and the simple pleasures of a secluded life. As the letter progresses, Porto-Riche confides that he is nevertheless continuing his work as a writer: “I am finishing this note upon my return from the countryside… I have received visits from influential friends… I thank him for my book…” The end of the letter takes on a warmer tone. The author thanks his correspondent for the interest shown in his latest work and emphasizes how much these expressions of friendship mean to him. The letter is signed with a beautiful handwritten signature, “G. P.,” which is particularly sweeping and distinctive. The document is mounted in a modern mat, with an old identification note in pencil: “Porto-Riche Georges de (1849–1930).” In very fine condition. Fresh paper, well-preserved ink, original creases. The mat presentation nicely highlights this personal account by an Academy-member writer, which has become a rarity on the market. A high-quality literary document, interesting both for its introspective content and for the personality of its author, one of the leading figures of French psychological theater during the Belle Époque.
