PESILLEAU (Jean) - Lot 254
PESILLEAU (Jean) Letter written from London, bearing the address 121 Manor Street, Clapham (London), March 2, 1877. 4 pages, in-8. An interesting letter addressed to the editor of the *Mercure Parisien* and the *Revue historique*, proposing the establishment of a regular column from London. The author outlines a plan for a weekly column devoted to English life, covering politics, literature, theater, the arts, and social events. He emphasizes the appeal of such a column to the French public and highlights his thorough knowledge of British society, gained after several years living in London. He mentions his connections in English intellectual circles, his access to major newspapers and news agencies, as well as his potential collaboration with the editorial staff of the *Mercure Parisien*. In a postscript, he also offers to provide autographs of English public figures and notes that he is a member of the Society of English Literature. This is a very interesting account of Franco-British journalistic exchanges at the end of the 19th century and of the desire to offer the French public direct information about England. Condition: very good.
