LICENSE FROM THE YEAR 1810. - Lot 252
LICENSE FROM THE YEAR 1810. Printed administrative document with handwritten sections, Nièvre Department, Châteauneuf District, Biches Municipality, October 1, 1810, 1 large folio. A rare business license issued during the First Empire, bearing the imperial eagle and several official seals, both embossed and inked. The document is issued to Mr. Louis Jouanin, residing in Biches (Nièvre), authorizing him to practice the profession of: “Lumber merchant” for the year 1810. The license specifies that the applicant has fulfilled the tax formalities required by imperial law and paid the corresponding fee to the collector of direct taxes, before the mayor issued him this license allowing him to conduct his business “without disturbance or hindrance, in compliance with the laws and police regulations.” The document is signed by the license holder as well as by the mayor of the municipality (Michot) and bears several official seals, including the embossed imprints of imperial stamped paper. This document provides an interesting insight into the administrative and fiscal organization established during the reign of Napoleon I, following the creation of the business license tax instituted by the Revolution and reorganized under the Empire. It illustrates the control exercised by the administration over commercial activities in rural areas in the early 19th century. Condition: normal creases, some soiling and minor marginal defects, slight historical restoration in the upper portion; overall well-preserved, with the seals and signatures perfectly visible.
