PARENTIS / PONTENX (Landes). - Lot 250
PARENTIS / PONTENX (Landes). Statement and appearance before the community regarding the taxation of lands claimed to be noble. Manuscript on paper, 2 folio-sized pages, dated 1790. Administrative document drafted on the eve of the Revolution. Legible handwriting. Some marginal wear and minor gaps without significant impact on the text. An interesting document concerning a tax dispute between the community of Parentis (probable reading) and Jean de Lestage, a landowner. The document addresses the taxation of certain properties whose legal status is disputed: noble estates, commoner estates, or freehold lands. The complainant argues that it is pointless to initiate legal proceedings over an alleged error in the distribution of the newly established tax. In particular, it addresses the production of title deeds, proof of land nobility, property boundaries and acreage, as well as the resulting tax implications. The text reflects the difficulties encountered at the end of the Ancien Régime in distinguishing between noble and commoner lands, a particularly sensitive issue in the context of direct taxation. Such debates became frequent as the revolutionary reforms that would upend the traditional tax system drew near.
