ROYAL ORDER OF THE LEGION OF HONOR - Lot 246
ROYAL ORDER OF THE LEGION OF HONOR Certificate of Knight CERTIFICATE OF APPOINTMENT TO THE RANK OF KNIGHT OF THE LEGION OF HONOR, issued during the Restoration, in the name of Louis XVIII, King of France and Navarre. A magnificent calligraphic document on printed vellum, adorned at the top with the royal coat of arms under a crown, surrounded by the collar of the Legion of Honor and the motto “Honor and Fatherland.” A wide engraved frame featuring the crosses of the Legion of Honor at the corners and on the sides. The certificate appoints Jean Girardon, a retired captain, as a Knight of the Royal Order of the Legion of Honor, in recognition of his military service, notably thirty-five years of service and several campaigns. The document bears the handwritten signature of the Grand Chancellor of the Legion of Honor, the endorsement of the Order’s Secretary General, and the dry seal of the Grand Chancellery. Large folio (approximately 55 × 70 cm). Typographic printing and handwritten text in brown ink on vellum. Dry seal at the bottom. Old creases, some soiling, creases, and small marginal tears, with no significant damage to the text; very satisfactory condition for this type of prestigious document. Historical note: This certificate dates from the period of the Second Restoration (1815–1830), during which the Legion of Honor, while retaining its Napoleonic structure, became the Royal Order of the Legion of Honor. Certificates from this era, bearing the coat of arms of France and issued in the name of Louis XVIII, are significantly less common than those from the First Empire and attest to the continuity of France’s highest honor under the restored monarchy.
