MONTRAVEL (Dordogne) - PARIS. - Lot 244
MONTRAVEL (Dordogne) - PARIS. Signed autograph letter regarding probate proceedings concerning the de Lestrange family. A 4-page handwritten letter in-4, dated Auch, August 29, 1791, with a handwritten address to: “Monsieur de Montravel, at the Louvre Hôtel de Marigny, No. 1488, in Paris.” Red wax seal preserved on the reverse. A few marginal losses and old tears without significant damage to the text. An important letter seeking legal advice, written in the context of an inheritance dispute involving several heirs. The author informs his correspondent of the status of proceedings concerning the heirs of Mr. Miallet and also mentions deeds and documents belonging to the Lestrange family. The correspondence analyzes the consequences of a recent judgment, the value of the evidence to be produced, the arguments likely to be accepted by the judges, and the advisability of filing an appeal. The author precisely outlines the procedural difficulties, the necessary supporting documents, and the strategy to be adopted to defend his correspondent’s interests. The document provides insight into the practice of civil litigation on the eve of the Revolution and illustrates the relationships between provincial notables, lawyers, and landowners.
