MIOMANDRE (Francis de) (1880–1959). - Lot 241
MIOMANDRE (Francis de) (1880–1959). Signed autograph letter (L.A.S.), Paris, Ministry of Foreign Affairs—Foreign Information Service, 3 Rue François Ier, July 2, 1917, 1 page, folio. An interesting letter from Francis de Miomandre, writer, translator, and future winner of the 1908 Prix Goncourt for *Écrit sur de l'eau*, who was then attached to the Foreign Information Service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during World War I. He writes to a correspondent to rectify an oversight that occurred during their last meeting. He informs the correspondent that he still wishes to purchase transparent paper for covering books, specifying the desired quantities and the price: “...I still wanted some transparent paper for covering books... ” Then he adds: “...if there’s still time, and if it’s still 3 francs for 25 sheets, please set aside 50 sheets for me.” Since he is leaving immediately, he notes that he will not be able to pick up this order until his return to Paris: “I’m leaving shortly... As soon as I return to Paris, I’ll come by to pick them up (on September 1).” A charming glimpse into everyday life, revealing the practical concerns of a man of letters in the midst of wartime. Francis de Miomandre (1880–1959), a French writer, critic, translator, and diplomat, received the Prix Goncourt in 1908 for *Écrit sur de l’eau*. A leading translator of Spanish literature (notably Cervantes), he also served as an attaché at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during World War I. 1 page, quarto size, on official letterhead of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The author’s handwritten address: “58, rue Théophile Gautier.” In excellent condition.
