MINISTRY OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION AND FINE ARTS - Lot 238
MINISTRY OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION AND FINE ARTS (Minister’s Office—signature unidentified) Signed autograph letter, Paris, December 22, 1884. One-page folio autograph letter on letterhead from the Office of the Minister of Public Instruction and Fine Arts, dated Paris, December 22, 1884. Unidentified signature, likely that of a staff member of the Office. An interesting official letter addressed to Gaston Thomson, Member of Parliament, regarding the equipment for the school in Aïn-Cherchar (Constantine Department, Algeria). The author announces the allocation to the school of a map of France, a map of Europe, a world map, and a chart of the metric system. He specifies that the allocation of materials for the school library can only be decided after verifying the presence of the required standard furniture for this type of facility. This document illustrates the ministry’s efforts to promote the development of elementary education in French Algeria, as well as the ongoing relations between the central administration and members of parliament advocating for schools in their constituencies. It provides an interesting insight into the educational policy of the Third Republic and the organization of public education in the Algerian departments.
