MILLE (Pierre) (1864–1941). - Lot 230
MILLE (Pierre) (1864–1941). Signed autograph letter. Paris, December 6, 1932. Signed autograph letter-card, 1 page, oblong in-12 format, dated 6-XII-32, addressed to Mr. V. de La Fortelle, 5 Rue Montaigne, Paris VIII. Postmark from Paris—Commercial Court. An amusing letter in which Pierre Mille declines an invitation to lunch due to a prior commitment. He writes, in part: “What a bummer!... I’ve received an invitation to lunch on Monday the 12th from the Académie des Sciences coloniales, for its 10th anniversary. Since the vice-president has made it clear that I’m expected to attend, I dare not miss it, regardless of the Alliance française’s interests.” Before concluding with a touch of humor: “I would have spoken to you so enthusiastically about your book!” The letter ends with his renewed apologies, followed by the closing: “Apologies, regrets, and warm regards,” and Pierre Mille’s handwritten signature. A writer, journalist, foreign correspondent, and member of the Academy of Colonial Sciences, Pierre Mille was one of the leading chroniclers of the French colonial world and a regular contributor to the major magazines and newspapers of his time. An interesting letter illustrating Pierre Mille’s connections with intellectual and colonial circles during the interwar period, mentioning the tenth anniversary of the Academy of Colonial Sciences and the ceremonial obligations that came with it.
