MILLE (Pierre) (1864–1941). - Lot 228
MILLE (Pierre) (1864–1941). Signed autograph letter. Paris, April 23, 1925. Signed autograph letter-card, 1 page, oblong in-12 format, dated April 23, 1925, addressed to Mr. V. de La Fortelle, 48 Rue Spontini, Paris XVI. Postmarks from Paris and a commemorative stamp from the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts. A short letter regarding the financial terms of a journalistic or literary collaboration. In it, Pierre Mille candidly outlines the terms of his compensation and proposes an agreement based on payment per line: “I will address the financial matter with the same clarity as you have. This will be the rate I accept elsewhere: 2 francs per line of 38 letters. Since yours is 30 letters per line, let’s say 1 franc 50. Please let me know if we are in agreement.” The letter concludes with a closing formula followed by Pierre Mille’s handwritten signature. A writer, journalist, and foreign correspondent, Pierre Mille was one of the leading colonial chroniclers and travelers of the first half of the 20th century. A contributor to *Le Figaro*, *Le Temps*, *L’Illustration*, and numerous other magazines, he published many accounts inspired by his travels in Africa and Asia and was a member of the Academy of Colonial Sciences. This document offers an interesting insight into the practices of the French press in the 1920s, during which Pierre Mille negotiated the terms of payment for his literary contributions in very concrete terms.
