MANGEOT (Émile) - Lot 215
MANGEOT (Émile) Letter from the author, Paris, June 6, 1890, 1 p., in-8, on *Le Monde Musical* letterhead (editorial stamp), addressed to an unidentified correspondent. An interesting letter concerning an appeal to Jules Massenet. Émile Mangeot states that he received a reply from the famous composer and immediately went to his correspondent’s home, though he was unable to meet him: “I have finally received Massenet’s reply...” Fearing that the recipient might have left Paris following some bad news, he adds: “I hope you haven’t been called back by some bad news. ” Always eager to see the matter through to a successful conclusion, he notes that he wrote to the maestro once more to inform him and convey his correspondent’s request, even providing the correspondent’s address: “I wrote to the maestro again to inform him...” Émile MANGEOT (1862–1941), founder of *Le Monde Musical* in 1889, played an essential role in promoting French musical life during the Belle Époque. A friend and correspondent of many composers, notably Jules Massenet, he often served as an intermediary between artists, publishers, and music lovers. A beautiful letter attesting to the personal relationship between Émile Mangeot and Jules Massenet, as well as to the mediating role played by the editor of *Le Monde Musical* within Parisian musical circles in the late 19th century.
