LOULOU - Lot 208
LOULOU [LOULOU] Telegram addressed to Jacques Pills, Royal Crescent Hotel, Brighton, postmarked August 7, 1955, sent from Paris, 1 p., in-4. An interesting private telegram addressed to Jacques Pills during rehearsals for *Romance in Candlelight*, while the troupe was staying at the Royal Crescent Hotel in Brighton prior to the first public performances. “Reason car will arrive only Monday morning stop Beuscher closed no address. — Loulou” This is a purely logistical message concerning the delivery of a car. The mention of Beuscher is particularly interesting: it most likely refers to Maison Beuscher, the famous Parisian musical instrument maker and dealer, supplier to many music hall and chanson artists. Jacques Pills, a singer before becoming a musical theater actor, naturally had ties to this establishment. The sender, simply identified as “Loulou,” clearly belongs to Jacques Pills’ inner circle. Context In early August 1955, the cast of *Romance in Candlelight* was based in Brighton, where rehearsals and the first run-throughs were taking place ahead of the trial tour that would then take the show to Southsea, Coventry, and finally London.
