LOUIS XVIII - THE KING’S SMALL PLEASURES - Lot 207
LOUIS XVIII - THE KING’S SMALL PLEASURES Certificate appointing a carpet manufacturer for the “Small Pleasures,” Tuileries Palace, January 25, 1816. An important patent printed on vellum (large folio), issued during the reign of Louis XVIII, bearing a red wax seal and several handwritten signatures. Dated Château des Tuileries, January 25, 1816. The patent is issued in the name of the Duke of Aumont, Peer of France, First Gentleman of the King’s Chamber, Lieutenant General, and Governor of the 16th Military Division. It appoints Jean Sallandrouze as carpet manufacturer for the King’s Menus Plaisirs, with the responsibility of carrying out all work and supplying all materials related to ceremonies, pomp, festivals, performances, and other services under the jurisdiction of the Menus Plaisirs. The document authorizes the recipient to use this title in all his public and private dealings and confers upon him the privileges attached to this distinction. The patent is signed, among others, by: The Duke of Aumont, First Gentleman of the King’s Chamber; Clearly signed by the Intendant General of the Silverware, Menus Plaisirs, and Affairs of the King’s Chamber (signature to be precisely identified); The Secretary General of the Ministry of the King’s Household; with official registration at the Ministry of the King’s Household. Founded in Aubusson, the Sallandrouze manufactory was among the most prestigious French houses of carpets and tapestries. This official appointment by the Menus Plaisirs constituted one of the highest distinctions granted to a manufacturer during the Restoration. A very fine and prestigious document, preserved with its original red wax seal, illustrating the organization of the King’s Household and the functioning of the Menus Plaisirs at the beginning of the Restoration.
