LIÉGEARD (Stéphane) (1830–1925). - Lot 202
LIÉGEARD (Stéphane) (1830–1925). Signed autograph letter (L.A.S.), Paris, 21 rue de Marignan, June 3, 1900, addressed to a “Dear Director and Friend” (probably Paul d’Estrée), 3 pages, in-8. A beautiful letter of condolence from Stéphane Liégeard—a man of letters, journalist, lawyer, and politician, and author of the famous work *La Côte d’Azur*—written following the death of Mrs. Paul d’Estrée. Expressing his deep sympathy for his correspondent’s loss, Liégeard first quotes a line from Corneille (“We never taste perfect joy”), before noting how deeply he had been moved by the thoughtful tribute his friend had paid him in *Le Monde Moderne*. He then laments the passing of Paul d’Estrée’s wife, noting that death has once again plunged many families into mourning in the wake of the flu epidemic then raging. The letter is imbued with deep compassion: “I sympathize with you with all my heart, knowing how much your tender soul has already been tried…” Liégeard finally expresses his deep sympathy and notes that Madame de Liégeard joins him in conveying “the assurance of all her sorrow and all her sympathy .” Stéphane Liégeard (1830–1925), a lawyer, prefect, member of parliament, writer, and journalist, is best known for popularizing the term “Côte d’Azur” in his book published in 1887. He was also a regular contributor to numerous literary journals of the Belle Époque and maintained an extensive correspondence with artistic and bibliophile circles. 3 pages, in-8 format. Printed letterhead reading “21, rue de Marignan.” In very fine condition.
