LE ROUX (Hugues) (1860–1925). - Lot 191
LE ROUX (Hugues) (1860–1925). Autograph letter signed expressing condolences, Saint-Germain-en-Laye, September 18, 1900. Signed autograph letter, 1 page in-8 on printed letterhead: “Saint-Germain-en-Laye, 47 rue de Poissy,” dated September 18, 1900. Autograph signature: Hugues Le Roux. A touching letter of condolence addressed to a correspondent who has suffered a family bereavement. “With what sorrow I learned of this this morning. The passing of these young people leaves a wound in our souls that never heals. Poor souls! We will be with you almost always...” A moving expression of sympathy written in a style characteristic of the literary sensibility of the Belle Époque. The writer speaks with modesty and humanity about the loss of a young loved one and assures his correspondents of his moral support. A journalist, novelist, traveler, and future senator from the Seine, Hugues Le Roux was one of the most active literary figures of the late 19th century. A contributor to *Le Figaro*, *Le Temps*, and *La Revue politique et littéraire*, he published numerous travelogues as well as several works inspired by his assignments in Africa and the Near East. This letter, written in a deeply intimate tone, reveals a more personal side of the writer. Far removed from political or journalistic concerns, Le Roux expresses himself with touching sincerity in the face of the death of a young loved one. The text is brief but particularly expressive, revealing the author’s literary skill and moral elegance. Hugues Le Roux’s personal letters remain rare on the autograph market, as most surviving documents pertain to his political or journalistic activities.
