LE ROUX (Hugues) (1860–1925). - Lot 189
LE ROUX (Hugues) (1860–1925). Autograph letter signed to a friend, regarding his book on Egypt and Madame Walbaum. Paris, July 11, 1892. Signed autograph letter, 2 pages in-8 on printed letterhead: “Hugues Le Roux - Temps - Figaro - Gil Blas - Revue Bleue - Lyon Républicain” Printed address: 8, place Clichy, Paris. Dated July 11, 1892. An interesting, friendly letter addressed to a close correspondent. Hugues Le Roux reminds him of a promise to visit Les Bruyères and conveys regards from his wife as well as from Madame Walbaum, who is mentioned several times. The most notable part of the letter concerns the preparation of a book on Egypt: “...I am currently staging a play at the Gymnase; would you do me a favor? You know the customs of the newspapers in your country so well... ” Le Roux thus seeks his correspondent’s help in promoting or securing a favorable reception for a book he is preparing on Egypt, a subject to which he had devoted several works of travel and observation. A particularly expansive autograph signature. This letter dates from the most prolific period of Hugues Le Roux’s career, when he was a star journalist for *Le Figaro*, *Le Temps*, and *Gil Blas*. The year is 1892, a time when the writer was engaged in a flurry of travel, lectures, and publications. The document is of twofold interest. On the one hand, it sheds light on Le Roux’s social circle, particularly around Madame Walbaum, to whom he conveys his regards with genuine warmth and friendship. On the other hand, it shows the author at work, seeking contacts to promote a book on Egypt while also mentioning a play intended for the Théâtre du Gymnase. This literary and editorial dimension goes far beyond mere courtesy correspondence and directly links the letter to the author’s intellectual activity. Hugues Le Roux’s letters concerning his publications remain significantly more sought after than his simple social correspondence.
