LE ROUX (Hugues) (1860–1925). - Lot 188
LE ROUX (Hugues) (1860–1925). Autograph letter signed to a correspondent regarding his lecture “Russian Youth.” Paris, November 27, 1888. Autograph letter signed in red ink, 2 pages, in-8 format, dated November 27, 1888. A fine example of literary and journalistic correspondence addressed to a correspondent tasked with reviewing or observing a lecture. Hugues Le Roux thanks the recipient for his remarks: “Thank you for your kind letter of Friday. I will certainly take your corrections into account. ” He then specifies the title chosen for his lecture: “As for my lecture, do you think we should title it: Russian Youth—St. Petersburg in Paris.” The author again seeks his correspondent’s feedback: “For the rest of the text, I greatly value your insightful comments.” The letter concludes with regards to Mr. and Mrs. Walbaum, individuals already mentioned in the writer’s other correspondence. Autograph signature: “Hugues Le Roux.” An interesting letter from the literary early years of Hugues Le Roux, then a rising journalist and future author of numerous travelogues. The document is particularly compelling because it sheds direct light on the genesis of a lecture devoted to Russia, the title of which is discussed with his correspondent. Le Roux envisions the evocative title: “Russian Youth—St. Petersburg in Paris,” a testament to his early interest in international affairs and foreign intellectual movements that would later fuel his work as a traveler and reporter. The mention of corrections, feedback received, and the preparation of a lecture places this letter at the very heart of the writer’s work. The presence of Madame Walbaum, already mentioned in other known letters from this period, helps situate the document within the Parisian social circle frequented by Le Roux in the late 1880s. The red ink used throughout the letter also gives it a particularly attractive appearance.
