LE PÈRE DUCHÊNE - Lot 187
LE PÈRE DUCHÊNE The Big Question Mark. Un Sou, No. 66, March–April 1871. An 8-page printed pamphlet, with a woodcut on the front page. A rare issue of the popular newspaper *Le Père Duchêne*, published during the Paris Commune, bearing the title *The Big Question Mark*. The text, written in the deliberately folksy and colorful style of the famous character Père Duchêne, constitutes a fierce political attack against Adolphe Thiers, the Versailles government, and the opponents of the Commune. The pamphlet pits the people of Paris against the “Versaillais,” defends the federates, and presents an argument in favor of the Social Republic, blending satire, invective, and revolutionary propaganda. This publication is representative of the Commune press circulated in the spring of 1871, a few weeks before the Bloody Week. Featuring an engraved vignette on the front page, the pamphlet is printed on paper of modest quality. It is complete with all 8 pages. Condition: complete copy. Paper uniformly browned; original vertical fold; small tears and marginal damage, particularly on the cover, without affecting the text. An extremely rare document, characteristic of the ephemeral printed materials of the Paris Commune.
