LABRIT (Landes). - Lot 178
LABRIT (Landes). Collective petition addressed to the Intendant of Auch requesting a reduction in taxes and levies following the frosts of 1742. Manuscript on stamped paper, 6 folio pages, dated 1743. Addressed to Monseigneur de Serilly, Intendant of the Generality of Auch. Numerous signatures or names of signatories. Incomplete document with significant marginal gaps, but the main text is largely preserved and perfectly legible. A remarkable petition submitted on behalf of the residents of the Sen district, part of the community of Labrit in Armagnac. The petitioners describe the disastrous consequences of the severe frosts that occurred at the end of 1742, which destroyed a large portion of the grain harvests and jeopardized the livelihoods of the rural population. The petition describes in detail the inhabitants’ state of distress, the inadequacy of the harvests, the impossibility of meeting ordinary tax obligations, and the need to obtain relief from land taxes, poll taxes, and other royal levies. The petitioners also denounce the difficulties associated with the distribution of burdens among different districts of the community and request the intendant’s intervention to secure a more equitable distribution. The document provides a particularly interesting account of the agricultural crises of the mid-18th century in the Landes and Armagnac regions, as well as the administrative mechanisms that allowed rural communities to request relief or tax reductions from the royal administration.
