LABOUHEYRE (Landes). - Lot 177
LABOUHEYRE (Landes). Minutes of a residents’ meeting regarding the appointment of representatives charged with defending the community’s rights. Manuscript on stamped Guyenne paper, 4 folio pages, dated 1785. Original or notarized copy executed before a royal notary. Bears the Bordeaux tax stamp, signatures, and endorsements. Old creases, small marginal tears, and signs of wear. An interesting document concerning the administrative life of the parish of Labouheyre on the eve of the Revolution. Gathered in a general assembly, the residents and landowners of the community appointed several deputies tasked with representing their interests in a dispute between the parish and various lords and holders of local rights. The text elaborates at length on the grievances raised by the residents and sets forth the reasons for their collective action. The representatives were given a mandate to take the necessary steps, to appear before the competent authorities, and to defend the community’s privileges, customs, and economic interests. This document provides a detailed illustration of how parish assemblies functioned during the waning years of the Ancien Régime and bears witness to the rise of community demands in the rural areas of the Landes region a few years before the events of 1789. This document is of particular interest for the institutional history of the Landes region and the study of rural communities during the reign of Louis XVI. Labouheyre, 1785.
