LA PRESSE (Daily political newspaper). - Lot 172
LA PRESSE (Daily political newspaper). Letter from Laurent LAPP, editor of La Presse, Paris, October 25, 1878. 3 pp., in-8 format, on printed editorial letterhead (“La Presse,” rue Bergère, Paris). An interesting political letter addressed to a friend, written in the midst of the major ministerial maneuverings of the Third Republic. Laurent Lapp discusses the upcoming appointments of tax collectors and advises his correspondent to remain in Paris in order to defend his interests when parliamentary sessions resume. He then analyzes the government situation and the consequences of the upcoming senatorial elections. The letter contains several observations on ministerial rivalries and the ambitions of Waddington, Léon Say, Freycinet, Carnot, and Gambetta. The author believes that Freycinet could become President of the Council, which would lead to a reshuffle of the Ministry of Public Works, while the budget debates risk provoking a “double conflict” before the end of the year. He concludes on a more informal note by passing on greetings from the “domino players at the café” and announces the imminent return of a friend to Paris. This correspondence is characteristic of a well-informed political journalist, offering a vivid account of the behind-the-scenes workings of French parliamentary life on the eve of the major reshuffles of the late 1870s. 3 handwritten pages on La Presse letterhead. Good condition, with a few normal creases.
