LA PETITE PRESSE. — The Reappearance of La Petite Presse. — - Lot 171
LA PETITE PRESSE. — The Reappearance of La Petite Presse. — Paris, May 25, 1871. Rare complete issue of *La Petite Presse*, 5th year, No. 1842, dated May 25, 1871, published in the midst of the Bloody Week. Large folio (approx. 56 × 38 cm), 8 pages on newsprint. A historic issue published the day after Paris was retaken by Versailles troops, following nearly two months of suspension imposed by the Paris Commune. The front page opens with an editorial titled “The Return of La Petite Presse,” in which the editorial staff describes the newspaper’s resumption of publication following the insurrectionary events and paints a striking picture of the capital at war. The issue contains numerous articles devoted to the ongoing fighting, notably “Un coin du tableau,” “Across Paris,” as well as reports detailing military operations, the state of the city, the fires, the barricades, and the advance of the Versailles troops during the final days of the Commune. It constitutes a first-rate account of the decisive days of May 1871, at a time when the repression reached its peak. A press document of great historical interest, published at the very height of the Bloody Week, while fighting was still raging in several neighborhoods of Paris. Newspapers from those days, often read until worn out or destroyed, have become significantly rarer than regular issues. Condition: Complete 8-page copy, originally folded, with a few marginal tears, reading creases, minor restorations, and normal foxing; no text missing. Good condition for this ephemeral publication on very fragile paper.
