HUGUES LE ROUX (1860–1925). - Lot 159
HUGUES LE ROUX (1860–1925). Signed autograph note with envelope addressed to Madame Walbaum. Paris, circa 1892–1893. Signed autograph note, 2 pages in-12 on Hugues Le Roux’s letterhead (8, place Clichy, Paris), accompanied by its mailing envelope addressed to Mrs. Henry Walbaum, Reims. In this brief, private note, Hugues Le Roux asks his correspondent to convey his sympathies and condolences to a third party. The note explicitly refers to a recent bereavement and the need to convey these sentiments to the person concerned: “Please convey our deepest condolences…” This note illustrates the writer’s ongoing relationship with the Walbaum family, a prominent family in Reims to whom he regularly sent letters, recommendations, and expressions of friendship. The item is preserved in its original envelope, bearing a 15-centime Sage stamp and addressed in the author’s own hand. 1 signed autograph note with preserved envelope. Good condition. An interesting glimpse into the private social life of Hugues Le Roux—journalist, novelist, avid traveler, and future senator—addressed to one of his most frequent correspondents, Madame Henry Walbaum, in Reims. Although brief, this note sheds light on late 19th-century epistolary customs, when networks of friends and family relied heavily on the mediation of close associates tasked with conveying recommendations, tributes, or condolences. The warm and trusting tone of the message confirms the long-standing ties between the author and the Walbaum family. The presence of the original envelope, which perfectly matches the note, enhances the significance of this item, which naturally belongs within a larger collection of correspondence sent by Hugues Le Roux to the Walbaums.
