HERVIEU (Paul) (1857–1915) - Lot 155
HERVIEU (Paul) (1857–1915) Signed autograph letter, Paris, September 9, 1897. 2-page autograph letter, in-8 format, dated September 9, 1897, signed by Paul Hervieu. Printed letterhead: 23, avenue du Bois de Boulogne. An interesting letter addressed to a correspondent regarding a rental dispute. After reviewing the complaint forwarded to him, Paul Hervieu states that he immediately wrote to Mr. Banette (presumably the recipient), asking him to carry out the necessary rental repairs without delay and to restore the apartment to its proper condition. He then specifies the respective obligations of the parties regarding the removal or retention of various items left on the premises, notably fixed installations such as coal bins, blinds, the gas meter, and doorbells. This correspondence illustrates the very practical concerns of Parisian real estate management in the late 19th century and offers a glimpse into rental practices of the time. A novelist and playwright, Paul Hervieu, a member of the Académie française from 1900 onward, was one of the most prominent playwrights of the Belle Époque. His works, including *Les Tenailles* and *La Course du flambeau*, were highly successful on Parisian stages. An interesting letter offering a glimpse into the private life of a member of the Académie Française and a major playwright of the Belle Époque.
