HENRI MANUEL (1874–1947) - Lot 154
HENRI MANUEL (1874–1947) Original vintage silver gelatin photograph, circa 1925–1935, signed on the mount. Large silver gelatin print mounted on heavy cardstock depicting an office interior from the interwar period. A man, cigarette in hand, sits behind a desk cluttered with files while talking on the phone; a woman sits beside him. In the background are an Art Deco bust, books, and various office items, suggesting an administrative or professional setting. The mount bears a handwritten signature, “Henri Manuel,” in the lower right corner, very similar to the signatures found on other photographs from the studio. Henri Manuel’s works are regularly sold with a signature on the mount or on the back, which is consistent with the presentation of this example. Henri Manuel (Paris, 1874 – Neuilly-sur-Seine, 1947) was one of the most important French photographers of the first half of the 20th century. Based in Paris from 1900 onward, he photographed leading figures in politics, the arts, and literature; served as the government’s official photographer from 1914 to 1944; and contributed to numerous illustrated and fashion magazines. His collection is now held by the Médiathèque de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine.
