GARIBALDI, Giuseppe (1807–1882). - Lot 149
GARIBALDI, Giuseppe (1807–1882). Signed official document, General Command of the Army of the Vosges, No. 376, November 1, 1870, 1 folio-sized printed page with significant handwritten notes and autograph signature. Very rare certificate of appointment issued during the Franco-Prussian War. Under the printed letterhead: “French Republic – General Command of the Army of the Vosges” the document states: “By virtue of the full powers conferred upon him by the Government of National Defense...” General Giuseppe Garibaldi appoints: “Mr. Thirault Daniel, medical student” to the position of: “First-Class Assistant Surgeon” effective: “November 1, 1870” The document is signed in the hand of: “G. Garibaldi” It also bears the signatures of the general staff, several administrative endorsements, wet seals of the Army of the Vosges, and handwritten annotations regarding the appointee’s salary and pay. This certificate provides direct evidence of the medical organization of the Army of the Vosges commanded by Garibaldi following the proclamation of the Republic. Upon his arrival in France in the fall of 1870, Garibaldi was given command of the Army of the Vosges, composed of French and foreign volunteers, with which he notably led the Dijon campaign against Prussian troops. Condition: normal creases from use, a small historical tear in the left margin that does not affect the main text, a few minor marginal tears that can be restored; overall, well-preserved for this type of administrative field document.
