GAMARDE (Landes). - Lot 148
GAMARDE (Landes). Power of attorney for the sale of half of a mill. Notarized manuscript on paper, 2 folio-sized sheets, dated 1595 (date written on the original reverse side: “Power of attorney from M. de Soyanne to sell half of the mill in Gamarde”). Late 16th-century cursive handwriting. Includes signatures and notarial seals. Minor marginal gaps and normal wear and tear without significant damage to the text. A rare power of attorney drawn up during the reign of Henry IV, by which an owner or beneficiary authorizes a representative to proceed with the sale of his share in a mill located in Gamarde, in Chalosse. The document sets forth the powers granted to the agent, the guarantees provided to the purchaser, and the legal terms of the transaction. Since mills were essential components of the rural economy at the time, such deeds are particularly valuable for the history of land ownership and feudal structures in southwestern France. The text sheds light on the mechanisms of transfer and circulation of property rights at the end of the 16th century. The old notation on the reverse side allows for immediate identification of the subject of the deed, which is relatively rare for documents from this period.
