FURSY (Henri). - Lot 147
FURSY (Henri). “Costume Parties.” Signed autograph manuscript. Paris, March 10, 1923. Signed autograph manuscript, 3 folio pages on graph paper, titled: Costume Parties For Mr. de La Fortelle (with the note at the top: Impressions de Gavroche). A long, unpublished satirical poem devoted to costume balls and social comedy, in which Fursy humorously contrasts the apparent elegance of these parties with the reality of human behavior. The text is filled with ironic observations: “There are some people who are really funny... ” and ends with a punchline typical of a chansonier: “I see two hundred thirty-six candles, And I’m climbing to Paradise!” The manuscript is signed and dated: Fursy March 10, 1923 This piece is most likely the preparatory manuscript for a monologue or song intended for a cabaret or a public reading. Henri Fursy was one of the leading figures of the Montmartre cabarets during the Belle Époque and the 1920s. As the founder of his own cabaret, he wrote several hundred monologues and songs, performed notably at the Chat Noir, the Capucines, and in the major Parisian café-concerts. Condition: very good overall condition; a few creases from filing and old filing holes; ink perfectly legible.
