François-Auguste GEVAERT - Lot 144
François-Auguste GEVAERT Original photographic portrait by Dupont, 67 Rue Neuve, Brussels, with a signed autograph inscription on the reverse. Brussels, September 29, 1877. Card/cabinet-sized portrait of François-Auguste Gevaert, composer, musicologist, and director of the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. Albumen print mounted on cardboard by photographer Dupont, Brussels. On the reverse, a signed autograph inscription: “To my dear and excellent friend, Count Camille Durutte. Brussels, September 29, 1877. F. A. Gevaert” The recipient is François-Antoine-Camille Durutte, Count Durutte, a composer and music theorist, known in particular for his works on musical aesthetics and harmony. He was born in 1803 and died in 1881; so the date should read 1877, not 1887. François-Auguste Gevaert, born in 1828 and died in Brussels in 1908, was appointed director of the Royal Conservatory of Brussels in 1871, a position he held until his death. His career as a composer, educator, and musicologist perfectly explains the connection to Camille Durutte, himself a music theorist. Another photographic portrait signed and inscribed by Gevaert is known to exist on the market, confirming his practice of sending such photographs. Condition: slightly yellowed cardboard, corners and edges with minor wear, faded but legible photograph, well-preserved autograph inscription. Conclusion: Very strong attribution: a signed and inscribed photographic portrait by François-Auguste Gevaert to Camille Durutte, Brussels, September 29, 1877.
