PARIS ARMED FORCES. — GENERAL STAFF. - Lot 139
PARIS ARMED FORCES. — GENERAL STAFF. Letter signed by Commander-in-Chief Boulard (?) regarding funds allocated to the extraordinary reserve and the Paris city gates. Paris, August 8, 1793 (Year II of the Republic). Folio (approx. 36 × 24 cm), 1 printed sheet with handwritten text and autograph signature. A rare official document from the Reign of Terror, printed on letterhead reading “Armed Forces of Paris. - General Staff,” dated August 8, 1793, Year II of the French Republic. Addressed to the president of a section assembly, this letter follows the general assembly’s decree regarding the fundraising effort for the defense of Paris. The commander-in-chief informs his correspondent that the commissioners have tallied the various sums paid by the section and specifies that “the total amounts to 4,615 livres,” of which 1,200 livres are allocated to the extraordinary reserve, with the remainder to be devoted to the maintenance of the city gates. The document is signed by the commander-in-chief (autograph signature to be identified with certainty) and bears a handwritten inscription by the president of the section assembly. This document attests to the financial and military organization established in Paris in the height of summer 1793, a few weeks after the elimination of the Girondins and at a time when the Convention was simultaneously facing federalist uprisings, foreign war, and difficulties in supplying the capital. The Parisian sections were closely involved at that time in the financing and oversight of defense measures, particularly the city’s barriers. A fine, well-preserved copy with a very clear print, wide margins, and handwritten text of remarkable calligraphic quality. A small ink stain in the margin that does not affect readability. An interesting document on the military administration of Paris during Year II, illustrating the financial role of the sections in organizing the capital’s defense.
