DUPLESSIS (Georges) - Lot 128
DUPLESSIS (Georges) Signed autograph letter regarding Gersaint’s catalogs. No place or date (circa 1880). 2 pp., in-8 on laid paper. A lengthy letter devoted entirely to the sales catalogs of the famous art dealer Edme-François Gersaint, in which Georges Duplessis provides his correspondent with a series of extremely precise bibliographic references. In particular, he describes: the catalog of the large collection of paintings by Italian and Flemish masters (1749); the catalog of books, paintings, prints, and drawings (1750); the handwritten catalog preserved at the Cabinet des Estampes; several annotated copies as well as various remarks enabling the compilation of as complete a bibliography as possible of Gersaint’s catalogs. This letter perfectly illustrates the scholarly work of the great historian of French engraving and constitutes a first-rate document on the history of 18th-century art auction catalogs. Beautiful signature. Provenance: former autograph collection.
