CUSTOMS. Letter of appointment addressed to Jean-Baptiste Pellut as inspection commissioner in La Courtepin (Aisne). Belley, August 29, 1831. Printed administrative letter with significant handwritten notes, 1 folio page on an official Customs form—Personnel—Appointment (No. 991), with a handwritten address on the reverse. Official notice by which the Director of Customs informs Jean-Baptiste Pellut, then a Customs brigade inspector, of his appointment to the position of Commissioner of Inspections, based in La Courtepin (Aisne), within the Belley district, with an annual salary of 1,500 francs. The document specifies that this appointment was made by decision of the Board of Directors, following the opinion issued on August 27, 1831, and instructs the official to report immediately to his new post, with pay effective as of September 1, provided he assumes his duties within the prescribed time limit. The reverse side bears the handwritten address: “Mr. Pellut, Customs Brigade Inspector, at La Courtepin (Aisne).” This document illustrates a new stage in the career of Jean-Baptiste Pellut, who was promoted to an inspection position after having served successively as a lieutenant, inspector, and then brigade captain. It attests to the geographic mobility and hierarchical advancement of Customs officials under the July Monarchy. Satisfactory condition. Original creases, minor marginal imperfections, and tears that do not affect the text; handwritten annotations and an address on the reverse. An interesting career document that complements a coherent administrative collection tracing Jean-Baptiste Pellut’s rise within the Customs Administration.
