CUSTOMS. Notice of the appointment of Jean-Baptiste Pellut as mounted lieutenant in Brunehamel. Charleville, July 20, 1816. Printed administrative document with significant handwritten notes, 2 folio pages on laid paper, addressed to Jean-Baptiste Pellut. Official notice from the Director of Customs informing Jean-Baptiste Pellut of his appointment as mounted customs lieutenant in Brunehamel, with an annual salary set at 1,600 francs. The document instructs him to report to his new post without delay in order to receive his salary effective the first day of the current month. This document marks one of the early milestones in Pellut’s career within the Royal Customs Service. It attests to his appointment as a mounted lieutenant, a supervisory rank within the mobile brigades responsible for border surveillance and the management of subordinates. It precedes the numerous promotions and transfers that would subsequently mark his administrative career. The document bears the handwritten signature of the Director of Customs and features, on the reverse, his handwritten address to Mr. Pellut, mounted lieutenant of the Customs Service, in Brunehamel. Condition: satisfactory. Folding creases from handling, slight soiling and marginal wear, a small tear and a corner missing on the reverse side with traces of a sealing stamp. The document is well-preserved and highly legible.
