ROYAL CUSTOMS. - Lot 117
ROYAL CUSTOMS. Letter of appointment of Jean-Baptiste Pellut as lieutenant of the order in Signy-le-Petit. Charleville, June 15, 1816. Printed administrative letter with significant handwritten notes, 1 folio page on an official Royal Customs form—Active Duty—Appointment (No. 4314), addressed and bearing postmarks on the reverse. Official notice by which the Director of Customs notifies Jean-Baptiste Pellut, then lieutenant of the Royal Customs Service, of his appointment to the post at Signy-le-Petit (Ardennes), with an annual salary of 1,000 francs. The document instructs the official to report to his new residence without delay to assume his duties, with his salary effective as of the first day of the month, provided he arrives before the prescribed date. The letter is signed by the Director of Customs and constitutes the notice of execution of an administrative transfer decision. The reverse side, used as a postal envelope, is addressed to: “Mr. Pellut, Lieutenant of the Royal Customs Service, in Hirson,” with postal transit stamps. This document dates from the early part of Jean-Baptiste Pellut’s career, shortly after the reorganization of the Customs Service during the Second Restoration. It documents his transfers between brigades along the Ardennes border, prior to his successive promotions to the ranks of mounted lieutenant, inspector, brigade captain, and then commissioner of inspections. Satisfactory condition. Normal original creases, slight soiling, and minor signs of handling; postmarks on the reverse. An interesting career document, part of an exceptional administrative collection chronicling more than twenty years of service within the Customs Administration.
