ROYAL CUSTOMS. - Lot 115
ROYAL CUSTOMS. Autograph signed letter from Inspector H. Manière to Jean-Baptiste Pellut, mounted lieutenant of the Customs Service. Servais, August 7, 1816. Signed autograph letter, 1 page, quarto size, with handwritten address on the reverse, wax seal on the reverse. An interesting letter of congratulations addressed to Jean-Baptiste Pellut, shortly after his appointment as mounted lieutenant of the Customs Service in Brunehamel. The author emphasizes that this promotion is a fitting reward for Pellut’s conduct and dedication in the service of the administration. He recalls the advice he gave upon Pellut’s arrival in the division, urging him to overcome any obstacles encountered in enforcing regulations, and expresses his delight that these efforts have been rewarded. Convinced that Pellut will continue to earn the trust of his superiors, he concludes with warm words of encouragement and expresses his sincere regard. This letter is a remarkable testament to the high regard in which Pellut was held by one of his immediate superiors. It sheds light on the internal practices of the Customs Administration during the Restoration, where promotion was presented as a reward for merit, discipline, and zeal in the service of the State. In satisfactory condition. Folding creases from mailing, scattered small foxing spots, traces of a sealing stamp on the reverse. Well preserved.
