ROYAL CUSTOMS. - Lot 113
ROYAL CUSTOMS. Autograph signed letter from a Customs inspector. Valenciennes, June 4, 1817. Autograph signed letter, 1 page in-4, with handwritten address on the reverse and wax seal. An interesting official letter addressed to Jean-Baptiste Pelluch, second lieutenant of the Customs Service in Saint-Amand, regarding his recent appointment. The inspector acknowledges receipt of his correspondent’s letter of May 26 and thanks him for his congratulations: “I have received, Sir, your letter of May 26. I thank you for your congratulations, which were most gratifying to me…” He adds that he will eagerly seize any opportunity to be of service to him: “I hope an opportunity will arise to return the favor; I will do so very gladly, especially if it offers you a real benefit.” The letter concludes with the closing formula: “I have the honor to remain yours sincerely,” followed by the inspector’s handwritten signature. The reverse side bears the handwritten address: “To Mr. Pelluch, Second Lieutenant of the Customs Service, in Saint-Amand,” along with his red wax seal. Written in the aftermath of the reorganization of the Royal Customs Service during the Second Restoration, this letter illustrates the relationships of courtesy and solidarity maintained among senior officials of the customs administration at a time when government services were being reconstituted following the upheavals of the Napoleonic Wars. A charming administrative letter, preserved with its address and wax seal, offering insight into the practices of letter-writing and hierarchical relationships within the Royal Customs Service during the Restoration.
