ROYAL CUSTOMS. - Lot 111
ROYAL CUSTOMS. Order appointing a brigade lieutenant. Charleville and Vrigne [or Vireux], January 1 and 2, 1816. Printed administrative document with handwritten additions, 1 folio page, on laid paper, bearing the royal coat of arms. Printed letterhead: “Royal Customs,” with handwritten references to the Charleville Directorate, Sedan Inspection, Vrigne Control, and Vireux Brigade. A rare official order appointing and installing an officer of the Royal Customs Service at the beginning of the Second Restoration. The Director of the Royal Customs Service orders the installation of Jean-Baptiste Pellat (probable reading), appointed brigade lieutenant, to replace his predecessor. The local controller is tasked with overseeing his installation, administering the oath of office, providing him with the necessary instructions for performing his duties, and ensuring the payment of his salary. The document specifies in particular: “...to provide the said gentleman with all the necessary instructions to properly carry out his duties, to administer the oath to him—if he has not already done so—before he may assume his duties...” It was signed at the Royal Customs Directorate in Charleville on January 1, 1816, and subsequently accompanied by a certificate of appointment issued on January 2, 1816, attesting to the new officer’s effective assumption of duties. An interesting account of the reorganization of the Royal Customs administration following the fall of the Empire, this document illustrates the hierarchical structure of the border brigades during the Restoration and the formalities surrounding the appointment of government officials. A fine administrative document from the Second Restoration, preserved with its handwritten execution notes and period signatures, illustrating the territorial organization of the Royal Customs Service in the Ardennes in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars.
