IMPERIAL CUSTOMS. - Lot 109
IMPERIAL CUSTOMS. Decree of the Board of Directors authorizing a payment of salaries. Brienne, August 10, 1814. Handwritten administrative document, 1 folio page, bearing several handwritten signatures of members of the Customs Board of Directors. A rare collective resolution of the Customs Board of Directors, drafted a few months after the First Restoration, concerning the resolution of the administrative and financial situation of a Customs official. The Council states that, following an order from higher authorities, the functions carried out in the department must be reorganized and consequently authorizes the payment of a salary to a customs employee, “as a lieutenant in the customs service,” until his status is definitively regularized. The text specifies in particular: “…the salary, as lieutenant of the Customs Service…” before concluding: “This document shall serve and be valid as appropriate. ” Dated in Brienne on August 10, 1814, the document is signed collectively by the members of the Board of Directors, including several officials from Customs and local government. An interesting account of the reestablishment of the French administration in the aftermath of the fall of the First Empire, this document illustrates the transitional measures taken to ensure the continuity of service and the payment of civil servants during a period of profound administrative reorganization. A beautiful and rare administrative document from the First Restoration, preserved with its numerous handwritten signatures of members of the Board of Directors, illustrating the procedures for managing customs personnel in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars.
