DIAZ (Gérard) - Lot 108
DIAZ (Gérard) Lumière, 1980. Original etching, signed, dated, titled, and numbered in pencil. A beautiful composition depicting a group of ancient Mediterranean ruins, where columns, architectural fragments, and monumental remains stand out against a powerful interplay of light and shadow. A few sketched figures discreetly enliven the background, while umbrella pines evoke the archaeological landscapes of southern Italy. Here, the artist combines a rigorous architectural composition with a subtle exploration of light effects, lending the work a quiet, meditative atmosphere. Print on laid paper with wide margins, titled *Lumière*, numbered 90/169, signed and dated “Gérard Diaz, 1980” in pencil. In very good condition. Born in Mostaganem in 1938, Gérard Diaz studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Oran before continuing his training at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. A renowned intaglio engraver and draftsman, he taught at the École régionale des Beaux-Arts in Rouen beginning in 1971. His body of work, consisting mainly of etchings and burin engravings, focuses on architecture, urban landscapes, and monumental ruins, rendered with a masterful command of light and perspective. He is represented, among others, by the Sagot - Le Garrec Gallery, which specializes in original contemporary prints.
