DESGENETTES (Camille) - Lot 107
DESGENETTES (Camille) Signed autograph letter to a patron. At the Sorbonne, February 9, 1852. 4 pp., in-8. A very fine thank-you letter written by the poet and man of letters Camille Desgenettes to one of his benefactors. The author joyfully announces that his young protégé has just passed the baccalaureate: “Your young protégé has just earned his baccalaureate with flying colors… He earned it all on his own.” He emphasizes that this success is due as much to the candidate’s hard work as to the moral support received from his correspondent, whom he thanks with deep emotion. He recalls the struggle to secure the young man’s future, speaks of his “eternal” gratitude, and affirms his desire to one day be able to demonstrate his gratitude in a tangible way. The letter concludes with a particularly touching tribute: “Please count me among your debtors… it will be a true blessing for your grateful and most devoted servant.” An interesting insight into the networks of patronage and intellectual support during the Second Republic, revealing an intimate and little-known aspect of Camille Desgenettes’s personality. Beautiful autograph signature. Armand de Sacy collection stamp. Provenance: former Armand de Sacy collection.
