DAX (Landes). - Lot 102
DAX (Landes). Letter from the administrators of the Dax District Executive Board to the Commercial Agency in Bordeaux regarding the supply of tar, pitch, and materials for the naval fleet. Manuscript on paper, 4 folio pages, dated Dax, 16 Fructidor Year II (September 2, 1794). Autograph signatures of the district administrators. In excellent condition. Interesting administrative correspondence from the Revolutionary period addressed to the Commercial Agency in Bordeaux. The administrators of the Dax district respond to a request from the Commission of Commerce regarding the supply of tar, pitch, resins, and other materials necessary for the manufacture of ropes and the equipping of the Republican Navy. The document describes the difficulties encountered in the Landes region in quickly gathering the requested quantities. The authors discuss local forest resources, regional production capacities, and the material and logistical obstacles hindering the supply of materials for the Republic’s war effort. This letter provides a particularly interesting insight into the economy of the Landes region during the French Revolution and the strategic role of products from the Landes forests in supplying the French navy. Taken as a whole, it sheds light on the relationship between local administration and national authorities at a time when the Republic was mobilizing all available resources to support the navy and the armies. Dax, 16 Fructidor, Year II (September 2, 1794).
